Following the summer break, the Fondazione Francesco Somaini Scultore ETS will reopen to the public on 9 October 2025 with a presentation of an exhibition dedicated to one of the artist’s most intense graphic series, created at the end of the 1990s.
The exhibition will showcase a wide selection of the ‘washed inks’ that comprise the Magical Etna series, which is both numerically and qualitatively significant (with over 200 titles). Organised in collaboration with the Maria Corti Foundation at the University of Pavia, the exhibition celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the death of the sculptor, Francesco Somaini (1926–2005), and marks the beginning of a series of events to commemorate the centenary of his birth. These events include the online publication of the Catalogue Raisonné of paintings, prints and engravings.
Having climbed Mount Etna several times during his lifetime, the artist approached the creation of these works with great passion, inspired by the spectacular 1999 eruption, the images of which were captured by Giovanni Tomarchio for RAI, as well as by Maria Corti’s renowned text Catasto magico, which was published by Einaudi for the first time that same year. This work is presented as an ‘erudite journey’ through the volcano, offering a rich tapestry of myths and legends associated with it.
More information will be released later. We invite you to stay updated through our official channels.
