CONFERENCE
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 9:00 PM, the Church of Saints Vitus and Modestus in Lomazzo will host the lecture Art, Space, and Spirituality: A Hundred Years After the Great Sculptor’s Birth. Held as part of the cultural series “Francesco Somaini: A Living Legacy in Lomazzo” – promoted by the Municipality and organised by the Lomazzo Cultural Association John Paul II to mark the centenary of the artist’s birth – the event invites us to view the beauty surrounding us with fresh eyes and to feel the pulse of a great cultural legacy still alive today.
Accompanied by four authoritative voices, one can embark on a fascinating journey into his expressive universe, discovering how—in his hands—iron, bronze, glass, and stone ceased to be mere inert matter and transformed into movement, light, and spiritual inquiry.
- The Man, the Master, and the Centenary – Professor Luisa Somaini, the artist’s daughter, will delve into the heart of her father’s creative journey, offering an overview of his work, and we will discover the initiatives promoted by the Somaini Foundation to celebrate this significant anniversary.
- The dialogue between art and architecture – Professor Marco Emilio Erba will explore the extraordinary artistic partnership with architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni, recounting the creation of the evocative mosaics and stained-glass windows designed for the church and parish complex of San Biagio in Monza.
- The Breath of the Sacred – Father Andrea Straffi will lead a reflection on Somaini’s sacred art, revealing how his bold, dramatic forms translate the mystery of faith and speak to the soul of contemporary man.
- Matter, Space, and Modernity – Professor Luigi Cavadini will explore the deepest roots of Somaini’s sculptural inquiry: his constant drive toward modernity, his challenge to space, and his unique ability to transform matter into pure vital energy.
